Chadwick Boys Defeat Halfway

After losing seven seniors last year and adding just as many freshmen, Head Coach Scott Payne said he knew the first few games of this season were going to be spent learning and rebuilding.

“We lost all five starters,” he said. “Some of the younger guys will have to step in and play varsity and make the transition from junior high to high school quicker than normal.”

The Chadwick Varsity Boy Basketball team started out with a loss against Forsyth on November 20. Coach Payne said, “I knew going into the game that we were playing a Class 3 school and that with our lack of experience we would have our hands full. Their full court pressure kept us uncomfortable most of the night, and we were never able to get our offense to flow. But over all I thought we competed and played hard, and we are just going to have to keep improving everyday in practice.”

The boys played at Walnut Grove on November 30, and despite playing hard, couldn’t pull off the win.

In the third game of the season, the team made the long trip to Halfway. But the long drive and the hard work paid off as they got their first win of the season, winning 49-47.

Freshman Dallas Meinders said, “We all played hard and made key shots when we needed to–and we played well together as a team.”

The boys will be hoping that combination leads to a couple more wins when they play their next game at Pleasant Hope on Tuesday, December 11, and their first home game on Friday, December 14 against Crane.
